Understanding grief

Understanding how grief can present itself and ways to cope

We have collaborated with Katrina Taee, who is both a bereavement counsellor and an End of Life Doula to create this short course to beginning to understand grief.

Primarily it has been designed with the families we help and support in mind, however all can get something out of it, for we all will experience grief at some point in our lives.

Here is what Katrina says about herself:

"In terms of my professional career, I have had five different jobs. My first career was as a State Registered Nurse, having trained at the Middlesex Hospital in London. I then went onto work for a private GP, helping him in his medical practice.

After that I started my own family, and had four children. When they were a bit older, I returned to education at the Psychosynthesis Trust in London and got a Post Graduate Diploma to work as a Psychosynthesis Counsellor.

I have been a counsellor since 1999, and became a Senior Accredited Counsellor in March 2015. I retired from counselling work in November 2017. For 13 years of my counselling career, and alongside my private practice, I worked as a voluntary counsellor at the Thames Hospice Bereavement Care Team, seeing patients who faced the end of their lives, and their families both before and after their loved one's death.

I also specialised in bereavement counselling and end of life issues in my own private practice. I have now retrained again, under Hermoine Elliott, who runs Living Well Dying Well, which is the organisation which trains End of Life Doulas in Britain."

What am I like as a person? I asked my large family to describe me in three words each and the qualities they came up with the most were…..compassionate, kind, sensible, calming, warm, grounded, empathetic caring and fun. I know they are probably biased, but hopefully they give you a snapshot of me!

Being a Doula, is where my heart lies. Ever since I was a nurse on the oncology ward when I was 19 at the Middlesex Hospital, I have wanted to work with those who face the end of their lives. I am so lucky to be a Doula now and it is a meaningful and profound way to bring all my skills together to benefit and enable people to make the most of their lives and prepare for their death.
